Salpivory by Colonial Reef Corals at Curaçao, Southern Caribbean

نویسندگان

چکیده

A salp swarm was observed in Director’s Bay, Curaçao July 2021, where salps were caught and consumed by three scleractinian colonial reef corals: Madracis auretenra, Locke, Weil & Coates, 2017; Meandrina meandrites (Linnaeus, 1758), Montastraea cavernosa 1767). The first two scleractinians are newly recorded salpivores. Since the coral polyps collaborating, predation not restricted polyp size. This is detailed report on salpivorous corals Caribbean.

Low symbiont diversity in southern Great Barrier Reef corals, relative to those of the Caribbean

The specific identity of endosymbiotic dinoflagellates (Symbiodinium spp.) from most zooxanthellate corals is unknown. In a survey of symbiotic cnidarians from the southern Great Barrier Reef (GBR), 23 symbiont types were identified from 86 host species representing 40 genera. A majority (.85%) of these symbionts belong to a single phylogenetic clade or subgenus (‘‘C’’) composed of closely rela...

Deep-water sponges (Porifera) from Bonaire and Klein Curaçao, Southern Caribbean.

Four submersible dives off the coast of Bonaire (Caribbean Netherlands) and Klein Curaçao (Curaçao) to depths of 99.5-242 m, covering lower mesophotic and upper dysphotic zones, yielded 52 sponge specimens belonging to 31 species. Among these we identified 13 species as new to science. These are Plakinastrella stinapa n. sp., Pachastrella pacoi n. sp., Characella pachastrelloides n. sp., Geodia...

A Connection between Colony Biomass and Death in Caribbean Reef-Building Corals

Increased sea-surface temperatures linked to warming climate threaten coral reef ecosystems globally. To better understand how corals and their endosymbiotic dinoflagellates (Symbiodinium spp.) respond to environmental change, tissue biomass and Symbiodinium density of seven coral species were measured on various reefs approximately every four months for up to thirteen years in the Upper Florid...

The Vibrio core group induces yellow band disease in Caribbean and Indo-Pacific reef-building corals.

AIMS To determine the relationship between yellow band disease (YBD)-associated pathogenic bacteria found in both Caribbean and Indo-Pacific reefs, and the virulence of these pathogens. YBD is one of the most significant coral diseases of the tropics. MATERIALS AND RESULTS The consortium of four Vibrio species was isolated from YBD tissue on Indo-Pacific corals: Vibrio rotiferianus, Vibrio ha...

Nutrient supply from fishes facilitates macroalgae and suppresses corals in a Caribbean coral reef ecosystem.

On coral reefs, fishes can facilitate coral growth via nutrient excretion; however, as coral abundance declines, these nutrients may help facilitate increases in macroalgae. By combining surveys of reef communities with bioenergetics modeling, we showed that fish excretion supplied 25 times more nitrogen to forereefs in the Florida Keys, USA, than all other biotic and abiotic sources combined. ...
